From the earliest centuries, the Church celebrated a feast, September 29, in honor of the angels: the "virtues of heaven," is to say all of the angelic world.
At the end of the fifth century after an apparition of St. Michael on Mount Gargano, southern Italy, was built here a church was dedicated to him.
Shortly after, around the year 530, Pope Boniface, a church dedicated to Saint Michel in the Circus Maximus in Rome, chose this date of 29 September, already devoted to angels.
This double dedication accrut so much the glory of the great archangel.
Since the sixth century, therefore, the Church celebrates this feast of 29 September, St. Michael and All Angels, which he heads.
September 29 has become traditionally "Saint Michel" party all at once religious and popular, which rhythm in the year marking a change of season, as "Saint John", June 24, marks the opening of the summer and some work in the fields.
Very recently (in 1969), the reform of the liturgical calendar was September 29, the feast of the three archangels whose name we know: Michael, Gabriel and Raphael and, always, throughout all angels.
The three archangels
Saint Gregory the Great we present thus:
Throughout the Old Testament angels are there to educate, protect, comfort and driving men. After the expulsion of our first parents, the angel with the flaming sword prohibits the entry of Eden, Genesis III 24 . An angel comforted Hagar in the desert, Genesis XVI XXI 9 & 17. is an angel who stopped Abraham's arm loan to sacrifice Isaac, Gen. XXII 11. Before Sodom was destroyed by fire from heaven, an angel made out Lot and his family in the city, Genesis XIX. The Patriarch Jacob saw in a dream of multitudes of angels ascending and descending scale that ranged from earth to heaven, Genesis XXVIII 12. God sent an angel to drive through the desert the Israelites to the Promised Land, Exodus XXIII 20-23. Elijah in the desert was comforted by an angel, First Book of Kings XIX 5.
The New Testament is also filled all the ministry of angels. Angel G Abriel was the messenger of the mystery of the Incarnation from Zechariah Gospel according to Luke I 11-20 , and Mary, The Gospel According to Luke I 26-38. An angel was educated at St. Joseph Worker of this mystery, Gospel according to Matthew I 20-23, and assist in its role as foster father Gospel according to St. Matthew II, 13-21 . Angels were sent by God to announce the Resurrection of Christ to the holy women, Gospel according to St. Matthew XXVIII 5-6 & Gospel according to St. Luke xxiv 22, to Mary Magdalene, Gospel according to St. John XX 11 . Angels finally introduced after the Apostles Ascension Acts I 9.
In his teaching, Jesus often spoke of angels as auxiliaries to the end of the world Gospel according to St. Matthew XIII, 36-43, 27 & XVI XXIV 31 , and he spoke of angels, Gospel according to St. Matthew XVIII 10.
The early church, as the Lord shall be assisted by angels, one of whom escaped from the hands of the Apostles Sadducees, Acts of the Apostles V 19-20, another issue which St. Peter the prison of Herod, Acts of XII Apostles 6-17.
An angel led the centurion Cornelius to St. Peter, Acts of the Apostles X 1-8 , another saved St. Paul's shipwreck, Acts XXVII 23-26.
St. Paul in his Epistles, and St. John in the Apocalypse, taught many things about angels.
But the Scripture has revealed the names of three of the angels: Gabriel which means "God force" Raphael "God Heals," and Michel "Who is like God? "
The only meaning of the name of the Holy Archangel Michael shows us the role that has accrued from the beginning to the end of time. At the head of the Almighty, he threw Lucifer from heaven, upon which this great tear open the porch tragic history; Lucifer who, forgetting his status as a creature, does not serve the purposes of God, is rejected by the victorious issue of Michael Who is like God?
The strength of the Archangel Michael carries his love of God that he proclaims. This love that good angels are God is not only to want to worship, serve and please him, but also and perhaps most importantly, to serve the man, knowing that the mystery of the Incarnation of the Word of God, this creature less perfect than he, he will become greater. ... God tells us, "says St. John Chrysostom:" I command the angels, and you also by the beginnings (Christ). I'm sitting on the throne, and you too by the premise. 'He raised us with him, it is written, and sitting with him at the right hand of the Father, Epistle of Paul to the Ephesians II 6.
"The cherubim and seraphim and all the heavenly host, principalities, powers, thrones and dominations adore because of beginnings, " Chrysostom: Commentary on the First Epistle of St. Paul to Timothy, XV.
"Whenever," said St. Gregory the Great , it is a work of wonderful power, Michel said that we sent, so that even his intervention and his name we suggest that nobody can do what God alone has the privilege of doing. The ancient enemy, who wanted out of pride to be like God said: I climb the heavens, above the stars j'érigerai my throne of heaven, I look like the Most High. However, the Apocalypse tells us that at the end of the world when it is left to its own strength, before being eliminated by the final punishment, he must fight against the Archangel Michael: There was a fight against Michael the archangel, " Saint Gregory the Great, Homily XXXIV on pericopes evangelicals.
You ask St. Michael protect you and you want to win him the fight against the demonic powers, then beat you with his arms being, face the world of those who proclaim that there is none like God ...
May your hearts widely open to the mystery of the Archangel Michael, so it helps you become straighter, stronger and more pure, incorruptible witnesses of divine truth that requires our consent.
