Egyptian St. Anthony or St. Anthony the Great

painting by Francisco de Zurbarán ( 1598 - 1664 ) painter the golden age English.

Anthony the Great, or Anthony of Egypt is considered the founder of the Christian hermit. His life is known to us by the story that made St. Athanasius to 360. He was born in 251 and died in 356 at the age of 105 years, between the arms of his two beloved disciples, Macarius the Elder Macarius of Egypt or Amathas.

Sayings:
A brother said to St. Anthony: "Pray for me." The old man replied: "I do not you take pity, neither God nor if there yourself not put yours and does not supplant God."

One day all the monks came to see Anthony and asked him to address them. He said to them in Coptic: the Scriptures are sufficient for our teaching, but it is beautiful we urge each other in the faith, and animate us in speeches. You, my son, you bring your father what you know, me, your elder, I give you what experience has taught me.
